Every woodworker can use more clamps. Especially clamps for unwieldy, irregular, and circular pieces that need to be glued up.. Like a lot of other woodworkers, I use strap clamps because they would seem to be the answer. They work very well in many different situations. However, since I am financially challenged(like a lot of other woodworkers), try to do things on the cheap as much as possible. While store-bought, specifically designed for woodworking strap clamps work well and are very nice, I use a cheaper alternative. Regular auto tie down straps work just as well and are much cheaper. These are available anywhere auto accessories are sold. But alas, there is no such thing as a free lunch. The only problem is the small winch mechanisim scratches or dents the pieces. A strategically placed scrap of wood solves that problem. The result is a well-built and professional looking piece built with inexpensive tools.
